Budget Friendly Design Accommodation in Paris? Yes Please! Generator Hostel Paris

If you are planning a trip to Paris and looking for a place to stay in the city, you will soon realize that there is plenty of choice of luxurious 5 star hotels, but if you are looking for a nice, charming accommodation that is not going to ruin your budget and is still close to all the attractions, it is obviously going to be more difficult to find such. Especially when you are planning to travel to Paris in the summer months like me.  Those months are a nice time to visit since the weather is great, but it is also very busy with tourists. Of course it is no wonder that Paris is on the list of every traveller visiting Europe. Gorgeous architecture, world class museums and the famous French cuisine are just a few reasons to visit.

Arriving

It might come as a surprise but I have never been to Paris before, at least not until July this year. I was always keen on going and from where I live, Paris is just a few hours drive away or a flight less than an hour.

When planning my trip to Paris it was important to me to be close to the city center and the places I wanted to see, but be a bit out of the tourist-heavy part of town so I was going to be able to get to know a local area of the city as well. I already had the Generator Hostel in mind, since the have a lot of popular hostels in major European cities and the one in Paris is their newest and biggest addition. The offer a chic array of stylish rooms to share or private rooms that offer you the same comforts as a hotel room but will leave you with some extra Euros to splurge on macarons.

I arrived at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport in the morning and from there took the train into the city. They run every 6-15 minutes and it took me only 30 minutes to get to Gare du Nord station. You could also take the bus or taxi, but taking the train was easy and inexpensive. From Gare du Nord the Generator Hostel is just a short and easy walk away.

Checking In

I got there a bit early, but still Check-in was smooth and simple. The friendly lady at the reception checked with the cleaning department and the room was already ready,  so she sorted me out with the key cards and the instructions to reach the 7th floor where my room was located.

Once there I dropped my bags and looked around. The private room was bright, spacious and very convenient with free Wi-Fi, light switches located next to the bed, enough plugs to charge all my electric devices. I was even surprised to find towels, a bathrobe and bathroom amenities- which is not always common for a hostel.

The design of the hostel is in tune with Paris cultural diversity: the chill-out area which is open 24 hours has a Moroccan feel, while the breakfast area ‘Café Fabien’ is fitted with original Parisian metro tiles.

Exploring the Local Neighborhood

The Generator Hostel is situated in Colonel Fabién, an emerging district of the 10th arrondissement. There are two metro stations nearby, one just opposite the hostel and the other one a short walk away, which makes it very easy to reach all the attractions of the city in no time. It is also worth staying in the neighborhood and exploring the district further. It is a little bit out of the touristic center and stays true to the soul of the city. Stroll through the Buttes-Chaumont Park, have a drink and a bite to eat in the countless bars and restaurants, venture through art galleries and vintage shops close to the Canal St-Martin and mix with locals. Here you can get a feel for the real, charming Paris. The Sacré-Coeur and the district of Montmatre can easily be reached by walking.

 Breakfast like a Parisian

In the morning from 7-10 am a rich breakfast-buffet can be enjoyed in the downstairs Café Fabien. You have a large choice of coffee specialties, juices, fresh fruit, croissants, bread, eggs, jam, cheese etc. which fills you up for a long day of sightseeing.

If you are still hungry you can choose from a menu of authentic and locally inspired foods from 12 to 10 pm or get a snack from the vending machine

Making new friends

There are a lot of cozy spots to hang out and mingle with fellow travelers. The cozy chill-out area is open all day long and there are PCs you can use to connect with your friends at home, a billiard table or you can watch a game on the big screen.

The gorgeous roof top terrace is open until 10 pm and from there you have a great view over the Sacré coeur and the city of lights while you enjoy a glass of wine and some snacks, if you want to stay up with your friends for longer head down to the stylish Metro bar. There are numerous events like the weekly resident DJ night or a Wine& Cheese tasting, so there is a lot to do and a great opportunity to make new friends from all over the world.
