Hotel The Exchange, Amsterdam – Where Fashion meets Design

The Hotel The Exchange sits on Damrak, one of the oldest and liveliest streets in Amsterdam. When I was looking for hotels for my upcoming trip to Amsterdam, the concept of the hotel caught my attention. Here rooms are dressed like models by young fashion designers from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. Since I was really curious about that,  I simply had to stay there for the two nights I had in Amsterdam.

The Hotel The Exchange Experience

I arrived in Amsterdam by train and was delighted to find out that the hotel was just a short walk of 5 minutes away from the train station. Having been on the road for several weeks already, my suitcase was heavy and I was happy that I only had to wheel it down the street to reach the Hotel The Exchange.

When I entered the small lobby I was greeted with friendly faces and warm smiles by the staff at the reception. At Check-In I already had to pay for my stay upon arrival. Be aware that it is only possible to pay with card and not cash.

I finally got the key card to my room and took the elevator up to the 6th floor, already full of excitement what is going to await me behind the door that lead to my room.

 The Rooms

Each one of the 61 rooms is unique and you won’t find one that looks the same. The designers put a lot of thought into the creation of the rooms and used their ideas and inspiration by the fashion world to turn the concept of dressing rooms like models into life giving each room their own personal touch.

The rooms range from 1 to 5 stares depending on size of the room, amenities that can be found there and the view. When checking in you will receive a room in your booked category. In fact when you return you might have a completely different room again, so it never gets boring.

The room we had booked for two nights was a 4 star room. When I stepped in it was a true “wow” moment. The entire wall of the room was covered in colorful fabric giving away the feeling you are sleeping in a big bedouins tent. Next to the bed was a little booklet explaining the idea of the designer behind the room. Our room was inspired by the big sweatshirts of the 80s. When booking you can select whether you want to have a twin size or king size bed. Of course the rooms are equipped with everything you need for your stay: free wifi, a flatscreen satellite TV and each room has its own private bathroom with amenities.

At a starting rate of 70 Euros for a one star room the hotel offers comfort and design for every budget.

The Location

When you are planning a city trip the location is essential and since there is so much to see and do in Amsterdam you don’t want to spend a lot of time getting to the sights or getting back after a long night out. The location of the hotel couldn’t be better and that makes it the perfect starting point for a day out in the city. The Hotel The Exchange is easy to find and just a short walk away from the train station. All the main sights, the beautiful canals and lively bars are also in walking distance and it won’t take you long to get there. The starting point of the canal cruises is in fact just opposite the hotel.

If you want to discover the city on a bike they have you covered with a bike rental place just next door. The hotel staff knows some great locations in the city and helped us a lot to plan our stay perfectly.

The Facilities

The Hotel the Exchange was founded in 2011 and is located in three interconnected buildings. Cozy common areas are built into various small corners of the hotel providing a meeting space and hang out spot. Comfy couches invite to rest tired legs after a long day of sightseeing. Here you can sit down, pick up one of the great magazines they have layed out there and plan your next day and two sewing machines invite aspiring fashionistas to show off their creativity.

The next door Café Stock is connected with the hotel and open for public as well as hotel guest. -Here you will again find a unique design on the wall. Everyone who was involved in the process of creating the hotel designed a little bird that is now printed on the wall.

The café is open to the public as well as hotel guest and has an array of delicious snacks as well as all day breakfast on the menu. So even if you start your day late you can get a good breakfast with pancakes, cereals etc. What I would have loved if there was a special menu or discount for hotel guests.
