Planespotting at Frankfurt airport

„LH6468 is ready for takeoff!” Langsam wird der massive A380 vom Gate weg und auf das Rollfeld geschoben. Ein beeindruckender Anblick wenn sich der große Flieger in Bewegung setzt. Spannung liegt in der Luft als er Richtung Startbahn rollt, auf das Signal des Towers wartet, die Triebwerke zu rotieren beginnen und der zweistöckige Flieger immer schneller und schneller wird. Die Geräusche der Turbinen werden immer lauter. Langsam hebt er sich vom Boden ab und steigt immer höher und höher bis er in der Wolkenschicht verschwunden ist.
Ich befinde mich auf der Besucherterrasse des Frankfurter Flughafens und vertreibe mir die Wartezeit bis zu meinem Flug nach Thailand. Von hier lässt sich das Spektakel auf dem Rollfeld, die Hektik und das Gewusel des größten Flughafen Deutschlands beobachten. Im Minutentakt landen und starten die großen Jumbos und auch die kleineren Regionalflieger. Passagierebuse, Catering, Gepäckwägen fahren umher. Flugzeuge werden betankt, beladen, becatert, Passagiere steigen ein und aus. Der Flughafenbetrieb ist immer in Bewegung, scheint auf den ersten Blick ein totales Durcheinander zu sein, ist aber straff organisiert. Hier dürfen keine Fehler passieren. Das ganze Treiben ist sehr spannend, denn es passiert doch einiges bis so ein großer A380 einmal abheben darf. Interessant ist es doch das Ganze einmal aus einer anderen Perspektive wahrzunehmen.
Am Wochenende ist die Besucherplattform von 10-17 Uhr geöffnet und es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall einmal vorbei zuschauen. Sei es vor einem Flug, im Transit oder auch einfach mal als kleiner Sonntagsausflug mit der Familie. Wem es draußen zu laut oder windig ist, der kann auch von drinnen gemütlich mit einem Kaffee in der Hand Start und Landungen der Maschinen beobachten.
Wieder schauen alle auf der Plattform nach oben in den Himmel. Ein weiteres Flugzeug bricht dieses Mal aus den Wolken, die Scheinwerfer sind schon von weitem zu sehen, es kommt näher, setzt präzise auf der Landebahn auf und wird immer langsamer. Ein kleines Kind neben mir jubelt und klatscht.

Excitement lies in the air while the plane rolls further, it stops, waits for the ok from the tower, the engines start rotating and finally the double-decker plane is getting faster and faster. The noise of the turbines is getting louder and louder. Slowly it leaves the ground and climbs higher and higher until it disappeared in the clouds.
I am at the visitor platform at Frankfurt airport which is a great way to let the time pass faster while I am waiting for my flight to Thailand. From up here one has a good view of the spectacle on the jet way, the hectic and the things that are happening at Germany’s biggest airport. At minute intervals big jumbos or small planes are landing or taking off. Passenger buses, Catering, baggage wagons are driving around. Planes are getting fueled and catered. Passengers are boarding or getting off the plane. The airport doesn’t seem to be still any second, something is always moving and it seems to be a total chaos at first glance, but every step is organized perfectly. Mistakes shouldn’t occur. Watching what happening down there is extremely exciting, because it takes a lot of preparation until a big A380 can take off. It is very exciting to see this from another perspective.
On weekends the visitor’s platform is open between 10 am and 5pm and it is definitely worth a visit. Doesn’t matter whether you are early for you flight, you have a long transit or you are going on a little Sunday trip with your family. If it is getting too loud and noisy for you, you might as well sit inside in a café and watch the planes taking off and landing at the airport with a hot drink in your hand.
The people on the platform are looking up to the sky again. Another plane comes out of the clouds, its lights can be seen from far away, it comes closer and then it precisely comes down on the runway and finally stops. A little child next to me is cheering and clapping.
