One must visit in Istanbul: The sunken palace „Basilca Cistern“

The entrance to the Basilca Cistern is very small and easy to miss. It is not far from one of Istanbul’s main attractions: The Haiga Sophia. And it is definitely as interesting and fascinating. After you managed to find this place and walk down the stairs to the ancient water reservoir that was built in either the 4thor the 5th century it is like entering another world.

There are spotlights on the columns and this impressive lightning gives the place a mysterious atmosphere. This place is, even if it is busy sometimes, always silent and cool. Everyone is just fascinated by this place and doesn’t want to break the silence.

At the very end of the reservoir, there is the head of Medusa on the floor and it makes the places even more mystical and you wonder what has happened in the past and what secrets it preservers.

It is a beautiful, atmospheric and emotional loaded place and it is easy to understand why it was one of the settings from the James Bond movie “from Russia with love”.

One of Istanbul’s hidden highlights.
