Shopping in Phuket: Lemongrass House – handmade spa products

Die Geschichte von Bobby und Palita Duchowny klingt ein bisschen, wie der Amerikanische Traum vom Tellerwäscher zum Millionär. Angefangen hat alles in einem kleinen Apartment in Bangkok in der das Ehepaar 1996 anfing, ihre eigene Kosmetik- und Pflegemarke herzustellen. Mit dem Bus fuhren sie dann jedes Wochenende zum Chatuchak market in Bangkok um die selbstgemachten Produkte auf ihrem kleinen Stand mitten im geschäftigen Treiben des größten Marktes der Stadt. Das Unternehmen wurde über Nacht bekannt, als UNICEF eine große Menge natürliches Insektenspray bei ihnen bestellte. Von dann an, nahm die Erfolgsgeschichte ihren Lauf, vor 10 Jahren zogen das Ehepaar mit ihrer Marke in einen eigenen, kleinen Laden nach Surin auf Phuket, etwas später dann fanden sie ein größeres Geschäft in Chengtalay. Hier ist nun die Hauptgeschäftsstelle von der Verkauf geregelt wird. Auch die Produktion wurde hier hin verlegt. Diese finden nun in 2 Schiffscontainern, die an das Haus angebunden ist statt. Alles wird immer noch von Hand angerührt; es gibt keine Maschinen in der Produktion. Die natürlichen Produkte kommen an. Mittlerweile hat das Lemon Grass House Shops weltweit eröffnet. So gibt es nun vier Läden in Singapur, 12 in Russland und einen Laden in Vietnam in dem man die Produkte erwerben kann. Das Ehepaar stellt mittlerweile Produkte für große Hotelketten her, die dann „rebrandet“ werden. Oft entwickeln sie einen eigenen Signaturduft für die Ketten.
Auf Phuket gibt es drei Läden der Marke. Einmal in Surin, in Rawai und in Chengtalay,den ich besuche. Das Haus ist an seiner limettengrünen Farbe schon von weitem erkennbar, betritt man das Geschäft erwarten einen die unterschiedlichsten Produkte. Ich frage die Managerin Sue, die mir mehr über die Geschichte hinter der Marke erzählt, wie viele unterschiedliche Produkte denn zum Verkauf angeboten werden. Sie lacht, „a lot! We have everything.“ Genau weiß sie es selber nicht genau, so umfangreich ist das Sortiment das, dass Lemongrass house anbietet. Sie erzählt mir, dass alle Produkte, natürliche Produkte sind. Das heißt alle Inhaltstoffe sind aus natürlichen Inhaltsstoffen, es werden keine Chemikalien verwendet. Selbstverständlich werden die Pflege- und Kosmetikprodukte nicht an Tieren getestet.
Der Laden ist gut sortiert, alles ist nach Kategorien angeordnet. So gibt es eine Abteilung für Gesichtspflege, für Seifen, Haarpflege und so weiter. Es kann auch das pure, konzentrierte Öl gekauft werden, welches die Firma herstellt. Alle Produkte gibt es ohne Duft, aber auch in jeder erdenklichen Duftrichtung. Ich fand vor allem dem Zitronengras, Mandarinen und Vanilleduft sehr angenehm. Von jeder Sorte steht immer ein Tester bereit.
Die Preise sind fair und für die Qualität der Produkte wirklich beeindruckend günstig. Für ein Body und Massage Öl, eine Bodylotion, ein Waschgel und eine Handcreme zahle ich gerade einmal 17 Euro (760 Thai Baht). Die Möglichkeit besteht sogar, sich alles als Geschenk einpacken zu lassen. Die Produkte fühlen sich gut auf der Haut an, spenden Feuchtigkeit und riechen angenehm dezent.
Trotz des großen Erfolgs, fügt Sue hinzu, ist der Betrieb ein Familienbetrieb geblieben. Die meisten, die hier angestellt sind, sind Verwandte von Palita. Vielleicht ist das ja das Erfolgsrezept.
The story of Bobby and Palita Duchowny sounds a bit like the American dream from rags to riches. It all started in 1996 in a small apartment in Bangkok where the married couple started their own beauty, cosmetic and care brand. Every weekend they would pack everything and go by bus to take them to their stall at Chatuchak market in Bangkok in order to sell their handmade products at the busiest and biggest market of the city. The company got well known overnight when UNICEF ordered a large amount of their natural insect spray. From there the success story started: 10 years ago they moved to Surin on Phuket, where they opened their own little shop, then a bit later, ca. 8 years ago, they found a bigger space in Chengtalay. Here is the main shop of the company and the wholesale &retail is managed from there. Also the production has been moved here. It is taking place in. two shipping containers which are joined with the shop. Everything is still handmade, there are no machines involved in the production process.
The all natural products are very popular. Today the Lemongrass House expanded and opened shops worldwide. 12 shops of the brand can be found in Russia, 4 in Singapore and one shop opened in Vietnam. Furthermore the couple makes products that are going to be rebranded for the big executive hotels. They even create a very own unique signature scent for the hotels.
On Phuket you can find three shops of the brand: One in Surin, one in Rawai and one in Chengtalay, the main shop that I visited. The house with its lime green color is easy to find. When you enter the shop all sorts of different products are waiting for you. I am asking the manager Sue, who is telling me a bit about the story behind the company, how many different ranges of products they offer for sale. She laughs, “a lot! We have everything.” She doesn’t know an exact number because the product range of the Lemongrass house is so large. She tells me that all their products are in fact natural product. That means that all the ingredients which go into the product are natural; no chemicals are used. Obviously the care- and cosmetics products are not tested on animals.
The shop is well-stocked. Everything is arranged by categories. There is one part for skin care, one for soaps, hair treatment and so on. One can also buy the pure, essential oils that the companies produce. All products can be bought without scent, or if you like they come in all the scents you can imagine. I especially liked lemongrass, mandarin and Vanilla. From each scent and product there is a tester.
The prices are reasonable and for the quality you get, they are actually very cheap. For a body&massage oil, a body lotion, a cleanser and a hand lotion I only pay 17 Euros (760 Thai Baht). There is also the option, to get everything wrapped as a gift. The products feel nice on the skin, are very moisturizing and pleasantly perfumed.
Despite the big success, Sue adds, the business stayed a small family business. Most people who work here are actually relatives of Palita. And maybe this could be the recipe to success.
