The Big Buddha- enlightened by the sun

Er ist von der halben Insel zu sehen und hat den besten Ausblick über Phuket. Die 45 m hohe Buddha Statue ist sicher eines meiner Highlights. Man erreicht ihn wenn man den roten Schildern auf dem Highway von Kata Beach nach Chalong folgt. Nach dem man abgebogen ist, geht es auf einer Landstraße entlang Bananenplantagen den Berg hinauf. Der Buddha thront auf der Spitze des Berges und zu seinen Füßen liegt der Strand von Kata und Karon und die Bucht von Chalong, auf der viele kleine, weiße Jachten ruhen.
Der Big Buddha ist mit seinen 45 m eine der grüßen erbauten Buddha Statuen weltweit. Aus Burmesischem Marmor errichtet und 60 Million Baht teuer. Der Bau wurde aus Spenden finanziert und ist sicher eines der größten Bauprojekte, seitdem die Sino-Portugesischen Einwanderer vor 100 Jahren Phuket City errichtet haben.
Über 60 Arbeiter sind seit an dem Projekt beteiligt, welches lange noch nicht abgeschlossen ist. Ziel der Bauarbeiten ist es einen Pfad zu errichten, mit dem man bis zum Lotusbett hinaufsteigen kann, auf dem der Buddha sitzt. Dies wird nochmal 20 Millionen Baht kosten und einige Jahre in Anspruch nehmen.
Der Eintritt ist frei, aber natürlich sind Spenden gerne gesehen. Bei Betreten der Stätte bekommt man ein buntes Tuch um seine Schultern zu bedecken, sowie einen farbenprächtigen Sarong, den man sich um die Hüfte wickelt. Von hier oben hat man eine tolle Aussicht über die grüne Insel und auch die Statue ist wunderschön anzusehen. Es wurde tolle Arbeit geleistet, Details wie Augen und Nase sind fein aus dem Stein herausgearbeitet. Vor allem der Kontrast des weißen Marmors gegen den blauen Himmel sieht besonders majestätisch aus. Es lohnt sich besonders auch noch einmal hoch zufahren um den Sonnenuntergang auf der anderen Seite von hier oben anzuschauen. Bilder und ein Bericht dazu folgen später.
Man hört das zarte Klingel der unzähligen Glöckchen im Wind die auf der Anlage aufhängt wurden. Wenn der Gong geschlagen wurde, hallt es über den ganten Platz, die Grillen zirpen in den anliegenden Bananenbäumen. Hier kann man ebenfalls Souvenirs, Getränke und Essen kaufen und so trinke ich aus einer frisch geöffneten grünen Kokosnuss das eiskalte Kokoswasser und beobachte, wie die Mönche in ihren orangenen Roben zur Zeremonie ziehen. Wenig später hört man die Zeremonie über Lautsprecher und den Gesang der Mönche. Was für ein faszinierender Ort.
You can see him from half of the island and he has probably the best view over Phuket. The 45 m Buddha statue is definitely one of my highlights on this trip. You can get there if you follow the red signs on the main highways from Kata beach to Chalong. After you turned left, you drive up a country road past banana groves up the hill. The Buddha thrones on top of the mountain and to his feets lies the beach of Kata and Karon and the Chalong bay, where many little, white yachts rest.
The Big Buddha is with his 45 m in fact one of the biggest Buddha statues ever built worldwide. Made out of white Burmese alabaster, it cost 60 million Baht. The project was financed with donations and is one of the biggest building projects in Phuket, probably since the Sino-Portuguese erected Phuket city 100 years ago.
Over 60 workers are involved in the project since 20 years, which isn’t finished yet. The goal is to build a path, which allows access to the lotus bed where the Buddha is sitting on. This is going to cost another 20 million Baht and will take a couple of years until it is finally completed.
Admission is free, but obviously donations are welcomed. When entering the site, you will get a scarf to cover your shoulders and a colorful sarong to wrap around your hips. From up here you have a great view over the lush island and the statue is nice to look at. Great work has been done here; details like eyes and nose are carved out of the stone very precisely. Especially the contrast of the white alabaster against the blue, cloudless sky looks majestic. It is absolutely worth it to come back again during sunset and watch it on the other site of the hill. You hear the soft ringing of the uncountable little bells, that are moved by the wind. When someone hits the Gong, the sound can be heard on the entire site. Grills are singing in the banana trees. You can also buy souvenirs and food and drink here. While I am sipping ice cold coconut water from a freshly opened green coconut, monks in orange robes are walking past to go to the ceremony. A little bit later the chants of the monks and the ceremony can be heard out of a speaker. A really fascinating place!
